Penny Black

The Penny Black was introduced on the 6 May 1840 by Sir. Rowland Hill (1795-1879) as a new way understanding the price of the letter. It was inspired by William Wyon's medal of 1838 and in Scotland it replaced the half-penny tax labels introduced in 1813. It had various essays (stamps that haven't been issued but made) by Jacob Perkins and William Wyon.
